Chemical & Pharmaceutical

Professional process cooling, commercial chillers, industrial heating, dehumidification, and temperature control solutions for chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturers nationwide.

When you are looking for a reputable company to assist in the supply of permanent or temporary temperature or humidity control solutions such as process chillers for critical applications, it is reassuring to know that the company you have identified to help has expertise and experience in your sector as well as a proven pedigree.

Precise temperature and humidity control are essential within any chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing plant. It can significantly reduce waste, as well as the need to go through revalidation processes. Whether you are looking for temperature or humidity control of the process plant, or the manufacturing environment itself, the team at Newsome can help you make sure you have the right solutions in place at all times.  We have proven experience in delivering many projects to the chemical and pharmaceutical sectors including jacketed vessel heating and cooling, exothermic reaction control solutions, environmental temperature, and humidity control, clean room applications, and Atex and zone specifications.

Here at Newsome, we understand the critical importance of delivering precise humidity and temperature control solutions to your chemical or pharmaceutical process and as such, can tailor personalised solutions to suit your exact needs, be that for a single packaged process chiller or a full turnkey heating, cooling, drying, and air-conditioning solution. We provide our chillers, boilers, heaters, air-con units, and all packaged and integrated solutions on a hire and rental basis as well as specialising in sales of industrial and commercial temperature and humidity control equipment.

Formed in 1973 by George Newsome, the company now provides consultancy, equipment, and maintenance services to many chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing companies based in the UK. Our areas of expertise cover every aspect of industrial process cooling, the supply of commercial chillers, air conditioner hire, heaters, boilers, and dehumidifiers alongside comfort cooling for offices and buildings.

We have become experts in exploring new industrial heating and cooling technologies, bringing these to market and developing the free cooling concept to help our chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing clients reduce their operational costs, and reduce as much as possible their carbon emissions associated with temperature control in the manufacturing sector.

A recent successful project we completed for a global pharmaceutical client with manufacturing facilities in the UK was the delivery of a humidity control solution. Most substances used in drugs today are hygroscopic and any absorption of moisture during the manufacturing process will affect the final weight, quality, and durability. When hygroscopic ingredients are weighed and mixed, it is important that the products’ weight is not influenced by the absorption of moisture from the surrounding air.

In powder form, moisture will affect the manufactured solid form’s flow, caking, compaction, and strength properties. Yeast, moulds, and bacteria require a certain amount of moisture to support growth, therefore controlling relative humidity is probably one of the most important factors in maintaining a sterile environment. A cool dry environment generally enables faster production, a better quality product and a longer shelf life. The majority of tabletting processes require humidity control between 20 and 35%RH at 21 to 24°C.

In most pharmaceutical air conditioning systems, the greatest moisture load is from the fresh air component, typically between 5 and 20% of the total room supply air volume. Depending on the moisture loads in the room, it may be necessary to only ‘deep dry’ the fresh air component using a pre-cooling coil (to 10°Cdp) and a desiccant dehumidifier (< 10°Cdp). Systems with a low fresh air volume or rooms with excessive moisture loads from high infiltration rates (negative room pressure), frequent door use, high product moisture load, etc, will normally require desiccant drying of a mix of pre-cooled fresh air and some return air. Dehumidifier capacity is controlled by an RH sensor installed in the room or the return air duct. This simple design is often adequate to accurately maintain the required RH in the room.

Our clients include many well-known engineering and manufacturing companies across a broad spectrum of industries including companies such as A-Safe, Meadowhall, BASF, Nestle, McVities, and Greencore, in addition to many SMEs located nationwide.  Our technical sales, service, and hire teams are located close to the main motorway networks so we can deliver a fast response to your individual chiller, heating, dehumidification, or air con needs right across the UK, thanks to our network of nationwide support partners.  All this is available at very short notice when required.
