Newsome and Penmann Senior Leadership Team Invests in High-Performance Leadership Development
At Newsome, we believe that strong businesses are built by strong teams. While technical expertise and engineering excellence remain at the heart of everything we do, developing our people is equally important to our long-term success.
Recently, members of the Group Senior Leadership Team (SLT), representing both Newsome and Penmann, came together for an off-site leadership and development day focused on strengthening collaboration, leadership and organisational performance. The event provided an opportunity for senior leaders to step away from their day-to-day responsibilities, reflect on the way we work as a business and identify new ways to support our employees and customers.
Learning from Elite Sport
A highlight of the day was a leadership session delivered by Jamie Jones-Buchanan, CEO of Leeds Rhinos and one of rugby league’s most respected leaders.
Drawing on his experience both as a player and as a leader within elite sport, Jamie shared valuable insights into what it takes to build high-performing teams, develop a winning culture and lead through both success and adversity. While professional sport and engineering may appear very different industries, many of the principles that underpin sustained success are remarkably similar.
Communication, accountability, trust, resilience and a shared commitment to achieving common goals are just as important in delivering successful engineering projects as they are on the rugby field.
Building Stronger Teams
Throughout the day, the leadership team took part in a series of workshops and discussions centred on collaboration, decision making and continuous improvement.
A recurring theme was that a well-connected team will always outperform even the strongest collection of individuals working independently. By encouraging open discussion and sharing experiences from across Newsome and Penmann, the sessions reinforced the importance of working together, supporting one another and drawing upon the wide range of knowledge and experience that exists across the Group. These collaborative principles are central to the way we work with both colleagues and clients every day.
Investing in Our People
We recognise that developing our people is one of the most valuable investments we can make. Leadership development is not simply about improving management skills. It is about creating an environment where people are empowered to make informed decisions, communicate effectively and continually look for better ways of delivering value for our customers. Bringing together senior leaders from both Newsome and Penmann also strengthens collaboration across the wider Group, allowing ideas, experience and best practice to be shared between businesses.
As the Group continues to grow, maintaining this collaborative culture becomes increasingly important.
Delivering Better Outcomes for Our Clients
Everything we do internally is ultimately focused on improving the service we provide to our customers. By strengthening leadership skills, encouraging collaboration and developing high-performing teams, we are better equipped to deliver complex engineering projects, respond quickly to customer requirements and maintain the high standards our clients expect.
Whether designing HVAC systems, delivering process cooling solutions, supporting critical maintenance or responding to emergency breakdowns, our customers benefit from teams that work together with a shared commitment to quality, communication and continuous improvement.
Looking Ahead
The Group Senior Leadership Team away day formed part of our ongoing commitment to investing in our people and developing the next stage of our growth.
As both Newsome and Penmann continue to expand, building strong leadership, encouraging collaboration and developing talented people will remain fundamental to our success. We would like to thank Jamie Jones-Buchanan for sharing his experiences and providing an engaging and thought-provoking session that challenged our leadership team to think differently about teamwork, culture and performance.
Days like these reinforce an important principle that sits at the heart of Newsome & Penmann: when talented people work together towards a common goal, the results are always greater than the sum of the individuals.
