Newsome Completes Blast Cooling System Upgrade for Park Cake Bakeries
Here at Newsome, we are pleased to have completed a major blast cooling and process cooling upgrade for Park Cake Bakeries at their production facility in Oldham, Greater Manchester.
The project formed part of a strategic investment into the site’s bakery cooling infrastructure, with the objective of improving process efficiency, increasing cooling performance and supporting future production requirements. Working closely with the client team, we delivered a complete turnkey solution covering strip-out, plant replacement, structural modifications, process cooling installation and final commissioning. The existing refrigeration and cooling systems were removed and replaced with a new low-temperature glycol cooling system designed specifically around the operational demands of the bakery process. The upgrade included new blast chill rooms, holding area cooling and chilled storage cooling systems, all connected to a central high-capacity air-cooled chiller plant installed on new roof-mounted steelwork infrastructure.
A major part of the project involved redesigning the blast chilling process to provide improved cooling consistency and airflow distribution across the product. Each blast chill room was fitted with dedicated floor-mounted cooling units designed to deliver rapid and stable cooling performance throughout the production cycle. To support even airflow across the product, we also incorporated punched plenum distribution arrangements within the blast chill areas.
Alongside the blast chill installation, we also upgraded the holding area and chilled storage cooling systems using new low-temperature fan coil units connected via insulated stainless steel glycol pipework. The complete system was designed to maintain stable low-temperature conditions throughout all stages of the bakery cooling process.
At the centre of the installation is a new air-cooled process chiller capable of delivering more than 400 kW of cooling using low GWP R454B refrigerant. The use of modern refrigerant technology and high-efficiency cooling equipment allows the system to provide improved environmental performance alongside reliable low-temperature operation.
As part of the turnkey programme, Newsome managed all stages of the installation, including roof plant removal, structural steelwork modifications, pipework installation, controls integration and commissioning. A dedicated site manager coordinated the project throughout the installation period, ensuring works progressed efficiently and safely within the live production environment.
The completed installation now provides Park Cake Bakeries with a modernised blast cooling system designed to support long-term production efficiency, process reliability and future operational growth.
This project highlights Newsome’s experience in delivering complex cooling and refrigeration solutions within demanding food manufacturing environments. From process chillers and blast chilling through to full turnkey HVAC projects, our engineering teams continue to support manufacturers across the UK with tailored temperature control solutions.
