Newsome Completes Swimming Pool Air Handling Unit Replacement for Leading Health and Wellness Operator
Newsome has successfully completed the replacement of a critical swimming pool air handling unit for one of the UK’s leading health and wellness operators, delivering a comprehensive turnkey solution designed to improve reliability, energy efficiency and long-term environmental control within the facility.
Swimming pool environments present unique HVAC challenges. High humidity levels, elevated temperatures and continuous occupancy place significant demands on ventilation and dehumidification systems. Any deterioration in performance can quickly affect air quality, user comfort and the condition of the building fabric itself. Recognising the importance of maintaining a stable pool hall environment, the client appointed Newsome to replace an ageing air handling unit serving the swimming pool area.
The Challenge
The existing air handling unit had reached the stage where replacement represented the most practical long-term solution. Located on a rooftop plant deck, the unit provided ventilation, heat recovery, humidity control and fresh air management for the swimming pool environment. The replacement project required careful planning due to the size and weight of the equipment, the rooftop location and the need to minimise disruption to the facility’s day-to-day operations. In addition, the replacement system needed to closely match the performance characteristics of the existing installation whilst providing improved efficiency and reliability.
Developing the Solution
Following a detailed site survey and technical assessment, Newsome developed a complete turnkey replacement solution. The new air handling unit was specified to deliver approximately 25,000 m³/h of air movement while maintaining the environmental conditions required within the swimming pool hall. The system incorporates advanced heat recovery technology, high-efficiency EC fans, modern filtration and energy-efficient controls designed specifically for demanding poolside applications.
The replacement unit was engineered to provide effective humidity management, maintain comfortable temperatures for users and support the long-term protection of the building structure by controlling moisture levels within the environment. As with many specialist ventilation projects, successful delivery required more than simply replacing equipment. Newsome’s in-house engineering team managed the entire project from initial design and planning through to installation, commissioning and handover.
Turnkey Project Delivery
The scope of works included the full mechanical and electrical isolation of the existing air handling unit, removal of the old equipment from the rooftop plant area and installation of the new system. Given the size of the equipment, specialist lifting operations were required. A crane was positioned on site to safely remove the existing unit and lift the new air handling unit into position. New ductwork transition sections were manufactured and installed to integrate the replacement equipment with the existing ventilation infrastructure. Existing heating and power services were reconnected to the new unit, while all associated controls were integrated into the facility’s existing systems. The project was carefully coordinated to ensure works were completed safely and efficiently, with minimal impact on facility operations.
Energy Efficiency and Environmental Performance
Modern swimming pool air handling systems play a critical role in reducing operational costs. Large volumes of conditioned air must be continuously circulated whilst maintaining temperature and humidity levels within a tightly controlled range. The new system incorporates advanced heat recovery technology which captures and reuses energy that would otherwise be lost through exhaust air streams. This significantly reduces the heating demand placed upon the facility and contributes towards lower energy consumption. High-efficiency fans, modern filtration systems and intelligent control strategies further improve performance whilst helping the client reduce long-term operating costs.
