Newsome Delivers Turnkey Temporary Cooling Solution for Leading UK Food Manufacturer in York

At Newsome, we understand that reliable temperature control is essential within food manufacturing. When production depends on stable environmental conditions, there is little room for compromise. We were recently appointed to deliver a temporary cooling installation for a leading UK food manufacturer producing a wide range of confectionery, cakes and snack products. The project demonstrates the importance of engineering expertise and the value of being able to adapt quickly when site conditions differ from the original plan.

Identifying a Better Solution

The initial scope of works was based on using two existing site chillers to provide cooling to two Newsome AHU150 air handling units. Before work began, our service engineers carried out a detailed assessment of the existing chillers to confirm they were suitable for the application. During this inspection, it became clear that the units were not in the operating condition required to provide the level of reliability needed for a critical manufacturing environment.

Rather than proceed with equipment that could introduce unnecessary risk, our engineering team reviewed the project and recommended an alternative solution that would deliver greater reliability and long-term confidence.

A Complete Turnkey Installation

To ensure the installation performed as required, we supplied and installed two Newsome NR150 chillers alongside the two AHU150 air handling units, creating a fully integrated temporary cooling system. By supplying both the cooling plant and the air handling equipment, we were able to take complete responsibility for the performance of the installation from commissioning through to operation.

Every aspect of the project was managed by our own engineering team, giving the client a single point of contact throughout the installation.

Making the Most of the Available Space

Space is often at a premium within busy food manufacturing facilities, particularly where temporary equipment needs to be installed without affecting day-to-day production.

To minimise the footprint of the installation, we designed and installed a purpose-built support frame that allowed the two AHU150 units to be positioned together in a compact arrangement. This practical engineering solution reduced the amount of floor space required while maintaining safe access for inspection, maintenance and operation.

Complete Mechanical Integration

Our scope extended well beyond supplying equipment. We supplied and installed both flexible and fixed ductwork to complete the air distribution system, together with all ancillary hydraulic hoses required to connect the NR150 chillers to the AHU150 units. Every mechanical connection was completed by our own technicians, ensuring the entire system operated as a single integrated solution. This turnkey approach simplified the installation while helping to minimise programme times and reduce the need for multiple contractors on site.

Supporting Continuous Food Production

Food manufacturers rely on dependable environmental control to maintain product quality and keep production running efficiently. Temporary cooling systems often support planned maintenance, refurbishment projects, production increases or equipment replacement programmes, making reliability every bit as important as cooling capacity.

By identifying potential issues before installation and adapting the project accordingly, we helped reduce operational risk while providing the client with a dependable temporary cooling solution designed specifically for their manufacturing environment.

Engineering That Adds Value

Projects do not always progress exactly as planned, and this is where engineering experience makes the difference. Rather than simply installing equipment based on the original specification, our team assessed the condition of the existing infrastructure and recommended the solution we believed would deliver the best outcome for the client. This project demonstrates Newsome’s ability to consult, design, supply, install and commission complete temporary cooling systems while adapting to changing site conditions whenever necessary. Whether supporting planned shutdowns, factory upgrades or emergency cooling requirements, our focus remains the same: delivering practical engineering solutions that keep our clients’ operations running safely and efficiently.
